VIRTUAL College Coffee Chats

We are delighted to introduce a new program which will allow alumni to provide students with crucial insider intel as they navigate the daunting college admission process.

Our new Bronx Science College Coffee Chats program is designed to connect alumni with students, to field school-specific questions and provide insights to help shape students’ college applications.

Here’s how it works:

  • As an alum, you will sign up for a virtual session between October 18 and October 30, 2021, identifying the college that you attended and selecting the day and time that works best for you.

  • Students who are applying to that school will then “pop in” during your chosen time slot to ask their questions, which might encompass anything from insights about school culture to how best to approach an interview or application question.

REGISTER NOW

By volunteering your time through College Coffee Chats, you can provide Bronx Science students with priceless support just when they need it most in the college process. We hope we can count on all alumni to sign-up, and we thank you in advance for your help!

If you have any questions or want to learn more about opportunities to support College Coffee Chats, please feel free to get in touch with us at alumnifoundation@bxscience.edu.

VIRTUAL Project Accepted 2021

Project Accepted is an opportunity for students to meet with alumni for personalized help on how to prepare, practice and finesse their interview skills, develop their personal brand and hone their strategy for applying to college. Students need our help to learn how to make themselves stand out and how to put their best foot forward.

We are asking alumni to join us virtually for the day - to meet individually with students, ask them practice questions, offer feedback on the way students present themselves and help students get ready for the College Application process.

Last year, we conducted more than 800 individual interviews with students. We are counting on all alumni to help so we can ensure that all seniors get the practice they need.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about opportunities to support Project Accepted, please feel free to get in touch with us at alumnifoundation@bxscience.edu.

Bronx Science Entrepreneurship Lab

We are so fortunate at Bronx Science to have an alumni network of visionaries and leaders who are shaping the future of industry. We believe it is important to help our talented students nurture their own visions and ambitions — and become the problem-solvers and changemakers of tomorrow.

That is why we are excited to launch our unique, brand-new summer initiative: the Entrepreneurship Lab!

The Bronx Science Entrepreneurship Lab is an enriching, immersive summer program for Bronx Science students to develop their own business ideas and learn from Bronx Science alumni with a wealth of knowledge and experience across every major sector.

The Entrepreneurship Lab will position our school as an entrepreneurial hub for students and alumni, and we’re energized to get started.

Here’s how you can get involved and help shape the Entrepreneurship Lab experience for our students. Bronx Science alumni have the opportunity to fulfill a myriad of roles in the program, including:

  • Team Mentor – the go-to resource for student teams of approximately 4-6 students. Team mentors will work with teams remotely on a wide variety of topics such as strategy, operations, marketing, finance, human capital and how to transform an idea into a legitimate course of action.

  • Functional Specialist – experts in law, finance, marketing and more to consult all student teams over the course of the program in their specific areas of business.

  • Content Leads – most needed at the Entrepreneurship lab! We have identified a number of key topics and core competencies that we believe are crucial to helping our student participants understand. We are looking for alumni to deliver the content on these key areas. Please see the schedule here and let us know where you can help.

  • Keynote Speaker – entrepreneurial alumni who have started a business or been an early employee to share their own career path, the story of how their company came to be and lessons learned along the way.

  • Job Shadows – enable students to experience the life of an entrepreneur by allowing at least two students to join your workday from start to finish.

All talks can be delivered virtually if preferred.

Interested in one or more of these roles? Please fill out the form at the button below.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about opportunities to support the Entrepreneurship Lab, please feel free to get in touch with us at alumnifoundation@bxscience.edu.

About Our Speakers

Dr. Hayley Gans ’83 is a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Stanford Health Care and clinical professor at Stanford University. After attaining her MD at SUNY Syracuse, Dr. Gans ’83 completed her internship, residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. Since becoming a member of the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute at Stanford Medicine, Dr. Gans ’83 has published extensive research on infant immunity and some of the distinct challenges of tailoring vaccines and effective immunizations for young children.

Dr. Ofer Levy ’84 was born to and raised by the artist Benjamin Levy and music composer Hannah Levy in New York City, where he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. After graduating from Yale College (B.S., Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry), Dr. Levy ’84 entered the Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program at New York University School of Medicine. There he earned his PhD under the mentorship of Drs. Peter Elsbach and Jerrold Weiss, characterizing white blood cell (neutrophil)-derived antimicrobial proteins and peptides. Inspired by his wife Sharon’s example, he chose Pediatrics and completed both residency and fellowship (Infectious Diseases) at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is currently Professor at Harvard Medical School as well as principal investigator, staff physician and the Director of the Precision Vaccines Program in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Boston Children’s Hospital. The Precision Vaccines Program (PVP) is a platform to foster international collaboration between academia, government and industry for development of vaccine formulations optimized to protect vulnerable populations. The PVP is focused on modeling vaccine-induced human immune responses in vitro using a variety of platforms including three-dimensional microphysiologic systems as well as global molecular (“OMIC”) approaches to accelerate and de-risk development of vaccines optimized for populations with distinct immune responses, including those at the extremes of age who suffer the most infections. He currently leads several NIH/NIAID-supported studies: (a) an Adjuvant Discovery Program contract, leveraging robotic and immunologic approaches to discover, characterize, and formulate novel small molecule adjuvants that may enhance vaccine responses of the young and the elderly; (b) an international Human Immunology Project Consortium effort employing systems biology to define biomarkers of neonatal vaccine immunogenicity; and (c) a number of coronavirus/COVID-related studies including a national effort to discover biomarkers of COVID disease severity as well as a project to discover and develop novel coronavirus vaccines. Bronx Science Career Symposium

Bronx Science Career Symposium

Our inaugural Bronx Science Career Symposium offers students the opportunity to hear directly from alumni about many possible career paths.

Introducing students to the various career paths they can pursue is essential, especially during this time when life can seem so uncertain. Many of our students are not familiar yet with the different avenues for achieving professional success, and we are counting on our alumni to help provide students with the inspiration and knowledge to envision their ambitions.

We are excited about bringing our students and alumni together for such a transformative experience. The Bronx Science Career Symposium is an entire school day featuring individual workshops from various alumni covering topics ranging from industry advice to financial literacy and job search skills. The school believes this is paramount and is devoting an entire day for the program. In order to allow for full participation for all 3,000 students, we need as many alumni to participate as possible!

How it works: Students and alumni will be hosted in virtual rooms, and the students will be allowed to select which workshops they would like to attend. We are asking our alumni to volunteer an hour of their time and speak to the students about their career, their industry, the path it has taken them to get there and their time at Bronx Science. We are asking you to share your story with our students and encourage alumni to facilitate interactions. The day will conclude with a more casual networking event where alumni will have virtual booths for students to pop by for quick questions. Alumni have the choice to lead a workshop and/or participate in the virtual networking event; whatever works best for you!

The full details are below (all times are EST):

Date: Wednesday, January 27, 2021
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (there are specific times you can sign-up for, you do not need to be available all day)
Location: Virtual (you will be provided with a Zoom link)

Please register ASAP. When you register, you will be asked to please provide the following information.

Visiting campuses and hearing about college experiences is so helpful to students wanting to learn more about their choices, and since the current circumstances prevent our students from doing so, we’re looking for help from young alumni.

Specifically, it would be great if young alumni could sign up to host an interactive webinar about your college to help students get a feel for the experience at your school, including a Q&A for prospective students. If you’re able to host a webinar, please review the available dates through the registration button below.

Our goal is to run the webinars beginning at 4 p.m. and into the evening. Each webinar would only be an hour long – so we are looking for young alumni to select a time that works best for them to help our senior class!

Annually, Bronx Science hosts a College Fair for students to learn about colleges. This year, we are hosting our first ever Virtual College Fair for students to understand more about each school's academics, extracurricular and professional opportunities. This is a crucial opportunity for our students to explore college options!

We need alumni, especially young alumni, to join us at our Virtual College Fair to serve as representatives for your college. As a representative of your college, you will help answer questions from students and tell them about your experience. The virtual career fair will be done through a special online platform. Instructions about how to join will be sent closer to the event.

Date: May 26, 2020
Time: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Place: Virtual (Link to be sent out closer to the event)

We want to represent as many colleges and universities as possible, so we are counting on our alumni to help. Please sign-up and please spread the word!
