CAMPAIGN FOR BRONX SCIENCE

We are asking 100 alumni to join our Atomic 100, our most prestigious recognition society. The premise is simple: commit to giving at least $10,000 a year for 10 years. Together, we can raise an additional $10 million for the school.

Members of the Atomic 100 are recognized with an individual “element” on our Periodic Table of Donors at the school:

The Bronx Science Promise

Dr. Morris Meister established The Bronx High School of Science with a simple promise: He wanted to bring together smart, talented, hard working, driven students from all over New York City in an academically rigorous environment. He knew they would be challenged by exposure to like-minded peers which would bring out the best in them and prepare students for success in any career they chose. Eighty years later, we can say Dr. Meister’s vision has been fulfilled time and time again. Bronx Science alumni have gone on to excellence in all fields. We have one of the most powerful brands in education; being a graduate of Bronx Science is a source of pride. For all of us, Bronx Science is where we got our start. It has shaped who we are.

Our Challenge

The City of New York only provides Bronx Science with approximately $5,000 per student annually. The vast majority of that budget goes toward faculty salaries. This leaves the school with only $300 per student to cover the cost of everything else, from textbooks to computers to renovating science labs to extracurricular activities. Funding for any expenditures beyond the state-mandated public school curriculum is the responsibility of Bronx Science.

In many public schools, families are expected to help make up the funding gap. But with 44% of Bronx Science students living below the poverty line, our Bronx Science families simply do not have the resources. However, Bronx Science is fortunate to have such a powerful alumni base who can help ensure that Bronx Science students today can enjoy the same transformative experience their predecessors did.

As alumni, we all benefited from the extraordinary public education we received. We now have an opportunity to invest in current Bronx Science students so they can live up to their own promise. All they need is financial support to ensure that they can continue to take challenging courses, participate in character-building extracurricular programs and build on their foundation for success.

The time is now to support Bronx Science. We must invest in Bronx Science today—to maintain our premier position, honor Bronx Science’s incredible legacy and plan for our future.

Our Vision

The school has identified five key areas that are essential for the school’s continued success.

  • Facilities and Equipment – Our students require access to cutting-edge equipment and technology. Improved facilities will provide our students with the ability to undertake more complex experiments and do more hands-on work.

  • Experiential Education – Extracurricular life is one of the most rewarding aspects of a Bronx Science education. Participation in academic and athletic teams, clubs, arts, publications and innovation programs provide students with leadership and other crucial skills. Students often cite their after-school activities as their most memorable and life-changing experiences.

  • Student Research – Providing students with access to facilities to conduct their own independent research projects is one of the hallmarks of a Bronx Science education. We aim to create summer institutes for students to pursue their own experiments and position themselves to undertake even more complex research at universities.

  • Curriculum Enhancement – Our advanced electives are often the most meaningful courses at Bronx Science, allowing students to explore their own intellectual passions. We want to launch a Capstone program which would serve as the culmination of a student’s academic experience that focuses on analytical thinking and independent work.

  • Partnerships – New York City is a vibrant and culturally rich landscape. We believe all of our students should be able to take advantage of all that the city offers. The creation of an arts program, for instance, would enable Bronx Science students to have access to the opera, ballet, Broadway, plays and museums. In addition, relationships with companies would enable students to participate in site visits, job-shadowing programs and internships.

Together, funding these initiatives will help make Bronx Science a richer educational experience and provide our students with the opportunities they need to succeed.

The Time is Now

We recently celebrated Bronx Science’s 80th anniversary. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to celebrate our illustrious past and to look toward the school’s bright future. We all have employed the skills and strong academic foundation that Bronx Science provided us to become leaders in our communities and industries. Today, let’s provide that opportunity to current Bronx Science students.

What does Bronx Science mean to you? We know the answer our current Bronx Science students would give, as would many of us: Bronx Science is a dream fulfilled. Bronx Science provides an academically rigorous environment, opportunities for socio-economic advancement and, of course, lifelong friends. These talented students deserve our help today. There is no better way to honor Bronx Science than to make a leadership gift.

How You Can Help

All donors to the Atomic 100 will be recognized on Bronx Science’s Periodic Table of Donors – an honor wall in the school that displays each donor as an element on the periodic table. There is truly nothing more Bronx Science than that!

Since its launch in September 2017, more than 30 alumni have committed to the Atomic 100 campaign. We are grateful for their generosity. There are a variety of ways you can make your own commitment to the Atomic 100, including planned giving. We hope you will reflect on what Bronx Science means to you and hope we can count on your support for this exciting campaign.

A donation to the Bronx Science Foundation is an investment in the future. Our talented students are poised to make an indelible mark on the world. All they need is your support to make their dreams a reality.
