student aid

We are committed to helping provide an educational experience where all Bronx Science students can learn without limitation. Student Aid is our biggest priority. With 44% of the student body living below the poverty line, students look to the school for financial support to attend school trips, pay senior dues, pay for prom, buy a yearbook and even essentials like clothing, food, housing and technology. The Department of Education provides very limited funds and the school relies on the Foundation for financial support to help our students.

When schools were abruptly closed in March and transitioned to remote learning, the Bronx Science Foundation promptly provided laptops to more than 100 students and paid for the WiFi connections for more than 20 families. Thanks to alumni support, all students were fully operational in time and did not miss a single day of instruction.

Through our Discovery Program this summer, we provided laptops to more than 50 students (a third of the students in the program) and WiFi connections to more than a dozen students. We also purchased hard copies of books and mailed them to all 150 students so they could experience literature as a physical book, rather than trying to read 300 pages on their computer. Students were delighted to have hard copies and many shared that their families were now reading the books as well.

We anticipate a growing need to purchase laptops, books and WiFi connections for Bronx Science students in the upcoming school year. Given the many unknowns at the moment, we expect the school will continue to rely on us for financial support to ensure all of our student’s needs are met.

Cafeteria Remodel

The Bronx Science cafeteria is original to when the “new” building opened in 1959. After more than sixty years of daily use by students, the cafeteria is long overdue for an upgrade.

Reimagined as a student center, we want to ensure that the cafeteria remains the hub of student life and provides students with an inviting space to socialize, study and eat. The cafeteria is used for a wide variety of extracurricular activities, receptions, athletic competitions and is the main place where students hang out with their friends.

The multimillion dollar renovation includes significant infrastructure upgrades, new lighting, new flooring, new furniture and more. Several local government officials provided $1 million for the first phase and promised another $1 million for the second phase, with the Foundation providing the final $500K. Now, with the significant budget cuts, we must raise the additional $1 million ourselves.

If you would like to support this ongoing effort, please make a contribution to our Capital Improvements Fund

All alumni who donate $2,500 or more to Capital Improvements or the Green & Gold Fund this year will have their name listed on a Wall of Honor in the Cafeteria.
