The Bronx High School of Science Vision

Since its inception in 1938, at the heart of The Bronx High School of Science, lies a commitment to invest in great minds, to introduce them to the world’s big challenges and provide them with the opportunities to help solve life’s problems.

Bronx Science has earned an international reputation as one of the best public high schools in the United States. The school attracts a blend of intellectually gifted New York City students who are culturally, ethnically and economically diverse. The 3,000 students who attend Bronx Science are New York’s best and brightest.

Bronx Science students take advanced classes that extend beyond the New York State Regents curriculum and the Advanced Placement curriculum. All students take required courses in writing, engineering, computer science and research. Advanced electives such as Genetics, Algorithms, Microbiology, Game Theory, American Studies, Analytical Chemistry, Modern Physics and more are all offered.

Our Science Research Program stands out as one of the most extraordinary high school initiatives in the nation. Students work for three years on independent research projects in leading university laboratories. Hundreds of Bronx Science students have received top recognition for their independent research projects through the renowned Regeneron Science Talent Search competition (formerly sponsored by Intel and Westinghouse), the most prestigious science competition for high school students in the country.

The Bronx Science educational model works, as evidenced by how our alumni have shaped the world around us to an unprecedented degree. Bronx Science alumni include eight Nobel Prize winners, more than any other secondary education institution in the world and more than most countries.

Join us in Institutional Partnership

Science is a fundamentally collaborative process. The best ideas come from sharing knowledge together, building upon each other’s work and challenging each other’s conclusions. We believe the best laboratories and research mentors nurture original ideas and young talent. That is why we seek institutional partners in academic institutions or leading industries to make a commitment to working with our students and serving as a part of the transformative Stanley Manne Institute.

The positive benefits of the Stanley Manne Institute are exponential: it promises to be an engine for scientific literacy and awareness through various communities in our city. The student research program will reach 3,000 young minds at Bronx Science alone, who will be able to bring back their knowledge to their families, neighborhoods and communities – with the potential to reverberate throughout New York and beyond. Our partner schools help us reach an additional 3,000 students and provide powerful opportunities to engage in science research. Today, students will be conducting research at the Stanley Manne Institute; tomorrow, they may discover a new vaccine, make a scientific breakthrough or even be awarded the Nobel Prize.

We envision four pillars to a Manne Institutional partnership:

Mentorships - Commit to appointing at least five research mentors annually for Bronx Science students participating in the national Science Talent Search. These are students who commit to performing experiments in labs and working closely with their mentors to complete a paper for submission in national competitions.

Speakers – Provide at least two leading scientists to present a talk on their current research or major scientific questions and challenges to our high school participants, alumni and key partners.

Site Visits – Host an annual tour in one of your labs for a select group of students to observe first-hand the connections between the classroom and their futures.

Sponsorships – Where possible, especially from our industry partners, we ask for organizations to contribute an annual grant and investment in the Stanley Manne Institute.

Our goal is to develop a long-lasting, rich partnership to keep cultivating the interest and talents in science research of our bright, diverse students.

Benefits of Institutional Partnership

The Stanley Manne Institute is well positioned to serve as the largest hub of student research in the Bronx, in New York City and the country. Students will receive a vital early introduction to the virtues of the scientific method and training with important scientific instruments. Bronx Science students are future researchers, teachers, industry leaders and problem-solvers.

Developing an Institutional Partnership with the Stanley Manne Institute at the Bronx High School of Science today helps develop brand recognition and outreach with future leaders and employees. Serving as an Institutional Partner also elevates the distinctive work of up-and-coming and established scientists in your lab and at your institution.

The more than 6,000 students will also further enhance brand name recognition and reputation for our institutional partners—which will extend to their families, friends and communities. It is this early engagement that can positively help shape their future college and career choices. An Institutional Partnership can help create a long-tail effect that helps further bring professional esteem and enhance public standing.

More than 50% of the students in our community are low income and look to our schools for access to opportunities. The students who will participate in the Stanley Manne Institute are also predominantly students of color, immigrants and first generation future college attendees. Institutional Partners can play a pivotal role in expanding the pool of deeply passionate, highly ambitious young scientists.

Bronx Neighborhood Partnerships and Stanley Manne Institute Mission

The Bronx High School of Science has been in the Bronx since the school’s inception in 1938 and in our current building since 1959. The school’s students, parents and especially our alumni are proud to learn and live in the Bronx, and our vision is that the Stanley Manne Institute will have a meaningful presence for all schools within our home borough. We believe in the talent of our neighboring schools and their students and we aim to see our entire borough thrive.

Bronx Science is proud to partner with our neighboring high schools DeWitt Clinton High School; the High School for American Studies; the Marie Curie High School and on the Walton Campus, the High School for Teaching and the Professions, Discovery High School and International School for Liberal Arts. We are also proud to partner with PS/MS 95 to help introduce younger students to the importance of science research and to help show them how meaningful and inspiring a science-based education can be for them as they continue on their educational journeys.

Each of our partner schools is within walking distance of the Stanley Manne Institute allowing students to maximize the opportunity. In the collective interest of the Bronx, we believe it is important that students at our partner schools have opportunities as well to perform their own scientific experiments and hear from leading scientists.

We envision the Stanley Manne Institute as a center firmly rooted in the Bronx, where students at Bronx Science and our neighbor schools will all have access to state-of-the-art resources and benefit from in-depth, hands-on science research.

Middle School Programs

We believe that it is important to instill a love of science and a love of research from a young age. Introducing young students to intriguing questions and meaningful experiences powerfully motivates them to learn more about the sciences and continue exploring the how’s and why’s of our physical world throughout school and beyond. We believe immersing middle school students in the process of scientific knowledge-building can be positively formative for them.

By working closely with our neighboring middle school, we will host several introductory science research weekend programs to middle school students. The programs may consist of single-day events or a series that unfolds over a few weeks. Students will get to visit the Stanley Manne Institute labs, learn about the different experiments, hear from high school students about their projects and observe model experiments. The goal is to introduce students to science and to Bronx Science and to pique their interests about the various opportunities in front of them in high school.

Professional Development

Annually, the Stanley Manne Institute will host a professional development day open to all teachers in the New York City Department of Education who are interested in learning more about a professional science lab, opportunities to use cutting edge equipment and how to best develop science research opportunities for their students.
