Bronx Science relies on the generosity of alumni, parents and friends to help provide our talented students with the educational opportunities they deserve.

The New York City Department of Education consistently faces budget shortfalls each year, and cannot provide Bronx Science or any public school with sufficient funding. This lack of funding creates a financial strain on our students’ families, as they are expected to supplement the school’s funding by paying for supplies, trips, books and more. At the elementary school level, these costs can be modest and can be covered by donations through the Parents Association.

At the high school level, the costs of labs, equipment, textbooks, extracurriculars, professional development and more can cost thousands of dollars per student. But it is often these hands-on experiences that provide students with the transformative experiences as well as the leadership, communications and collaborative skills necessary to succeed in today’s world.

The New York City Department of Education provides Bronx Science with only $300 per student each school year to cover the above operating expenses. The bulk of the Bronx Science budget is allocated towards teacher salaries and the remaining budget must cover all other expenses.

This is where the Bronx Science Foundation comes in — we provide the school with approximately $1 - $2 million a year, essentially doubling or tripling the amount of flexible funding provided. This allows the school to provide crucial financial aid for students, subsidies for extracurricular activities, funding for teachers to receive professional development training to teach advanced electives, upgrading to state of the art equipment and more. 

Bronx Science has a long history of identifying, incubating and developing the talent that American industry, medicine and technology needs to innovate.
