Volunteer Opportunities
The Bronx Science Foundation provides a variety of ways for alumni to become involved and give back to the school. The below volunteer opportunities are designed to connect fellow alumni with each other, with students and with our school.

College Support
Alumni play a pivotal role in helping our students prepare for college by sharing their own experiences, offering insights and lending a supportive ear to listen to students’ questions and concerns.

Project Accepted matches students with alumni and is designed for students to practice their interview skills. While not all colleges offer interviews as part of the application process, our students still find the interview practice essential by helping them refine their story and gain a crucial lifelong skill.
Project Accepted is held annually each fall. All interviewers are provided with suggested guidelines and practice questions. Alumni can participate in person or virtually. Since the program’s inception, more than 1,000 alumni have volunteered and many have shared that Project Accepted is one of the most rewarding programs they do all year.

Different from the typical college personal statement, supplements are a critical component of the application and are unique to each school. They typically focus on why the student is a great fit for that particular school. Admissions Officers often tell us that supplements represent the most important part of the application.
Our College Supplement program matches students and alumni together to review these supplements. Alumni provide a unique vantage point and understanding of the ethos of the particular college they attended, which can help the student refine and finesse their supplement.
This program is entirely virtual. Alumni review the supplemental essays independently and offer their comments to students via email. Volunteering to help a student for this critical part of the application process is a great way to give back and help Bronx Science students succeed!

Every year, Bronx Science hosts a college fair where students can learn about different colleges from admissions officers. We also offer a special alumni component, providing students an opportunity to hear an honest perspective directly from their peers attending the school of interest. This is a great way for recent alumni to stay connected and help Bronx Science students.
Mentoring and
Student Life
Alumni play a pivotal role in mentoring and enriching the life of current Bronx Science students.
-
Bronx Science has two award-winning robotics teams who compete in the nationwide FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition. Our robotics teams are always looking for mentors with an expertise in innovation, computer science and engineering. The teams meet multiple times a week after school; during “build season” in January and February, the teams meet every day after school and all day on Saturdays. The satisfaction of helping students design and program a robot is truly inspiring. The teams do ask that mentors commit to attending multiple team meetings on a consistent schedule, as that is essential for building continuity and success.
-
The Speech & Debate Team competes locally, regionally and nationally, attending more than 50 tournaments a year. The Team is always in need of alumni who are willing and able to judge at tournaments, including the annual New York City Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament, also known as “Big Bronx,” held every October. Tournaments are held on the weekends and offer a fantastic opportunity to help our students excel and to give back to this prestigious school program.
Alumni Reunion
Weekend
Every June, the Bronx Science Foundation hosts Alumni Reunion Weekend, which includes individual celebrations for classes celebrating milestone reunions.
-
We need alumni volunteers to help us spread the word to classmates, encourage them to attend and share ideas with us on ways to personalize your class reunion. We will take care of all the logistics and the hard parts — we just need alumni to help with the fun parts!
Speaking Opportunities
-
Our Alumni in the Classroom series invites alumni to visit the school for half a day to speak with students about their time at Bronx Science and their career. Hearing from successful alumni can inspire new ideas and ambitions in our students. There are limited opportunities for this program every year.
