WNYC reports on the recent announcement by the NYC Department of Education of a $15 million program to address the underrepresentation of African American and Latino students at the specialized high schools:

http://www.wnyc.org/story/city-recruit-more-blacks-latinos-specialized-high-schools/

The DoE's initiative will focus mainly on improving outreach (to increase awareness of the specialized high schools), improving education, and offering free test preparation in underrepresented communities. These initiatives are exactly what the Bronx Science Alumni Association has been advocating.

The DoE is not proposing to change the admissions standards, and in the announcement Mayor de Blasio said such standards must be maintained. Many Bronx Science alumni stepped up to advance these changes.

We'd like to thank all alumni for their input and support, including all those who spoke out publicly and passionately, including NYS Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz (class of 1971), NYS Senator Toby Stavisky (class of 1956), former NYS Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (class of 1976), and especially our esteemed former principals, Stanley Blumenstein (class of 1963) and Vincent Galasso, who in December 2014 voluntarily traveled from afar and waited 9 hours just to give their allotted 3 minutes of spirited testimony at City Hall in support of the mission of the specialized high schools.

We consider this a a great victory for all stakeholders, especially students of all backgrounds, as we improve education while keeping the standard objective, transparent, and incorruptible.
