BREAKING NEWS - Regeneron to Assume Sponsorship of Science Talent Search

"What goes around, comes around," as the saying goes. First there was the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, then the Intel Science Talent Search. Over the years, many Bronx Science alumni received their first serious laboratory experience working on a research project for the STS, under any name.

And several of those Bronx Science STS alumni have gone on to some of the most prestigious positions in scientific research, in the United States and globally.

Needless to say, it was distressing to hear that Intel had decided that it was passing on the burden of sponsoring the competition. But it appears that Bronx Science has itself played a role in creating a future for the STS.

Today, Tarrytown, NY-based Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. took over the sponsorship, pledging $100 million to support the Science Talent Search and related programs through 2026. The company also doubled awards for the top 300 scientists and their schools, to $2,000 each.

And the Chief Scientist and co-founder of Regeneron is none other than George Yancopoulos (Bronx Science '76), who was an STS finalist at Bronx Science in 1976 for his research that involved cutting protozoans in half to see the factors that enabled the tiny organisms to regenerate.

Tremendous thanks to George Yancopoulos for continuing the glory days of the newly anointed "Regeneron Science Talent Search" -- and of course for making us all proud by doing so much terrific work after Bronx Science, and then giving back to support a new generation of science talent, at Bronx Science and everywhere.
