With turmoil at the New York City Dept. of Homeless Services, as well as the December resignation of  Commissioner Gilbert Taylor, Mayor De Blasio has appointed a new Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services to right the ship.

She is Dr. Herminia Palacio (Bronx Science '79), who was raised in the Bronx and attended Columbia University (Barnard) after Science.  She then received her Masters in Public Health at U.C. Berkeley and her medical degree at Mount Sinai in NYC.

The daughter of a subway token clerk and a bus driver whose mother “suffered a psychiatric break” when Dr. Palacio was 17, Dr. Palacio has worked extensively in San Francisco during the AIDS crisis and in Harris County, Texas, which absorbed many of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Dr. Palacio will be returning to New York to start work on January 25th for Mayor De Blasio.
